A Randomised Trial of In-Home Preventive Visits With Annual Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment: Base-Line-Findings of the EIGER Project

Abstract

We have previously demonstrated that in-home, comprehensive geriatric assessment combined woth regular home visits may prevent or delay the onset of functional disability and reduce the number of nursing home admissions in elderly persons. This report presents the methods, the purpose, and baseline date from the ongoing EIGER project (Evaluation of In-Home Geriatric Health visits in Elderly Residents). Pre-randomisation data from the 791 persons aged 75 years and older participating in the project reveal major significant gender differences for many baseline characteristics. The epidemiologic relevance and the implications of these findings for the evaluation analysis of the EIGER project are discussed.
